Integrative School Safety Plan

Safety Letter to Parents

August 2023

Dear Pali Parents,

While we hope we never find our school in any of the situations below, we still want you to be prepared for an emergency situation during school hours and Beyond the Bell. We recommend that all parents and caregivers review this sheet and keep it at home where you can easily find it. We also recommend that you take a photo and law enforcement will go out through Blackboard Connect and Fresh Schools. It is VERY IMPORTANT that your contact information be up to date on your child’s Emergency InformationCard in the school office and our Fresh Schools website.

Sincerely,
The Safety Committee

IN CASE OF EITHER A LOCK DOWN OR SHELTER IN PLACE DURING SCHOOL HOURS AND BEYOND THE BELL…
Students are sheltered in a locked classroom away from anything that can hurt them. During an emergency where the campus must be protected, parents will not be able to pick up their children until the school campus is declared to be safe by law enforcement. Parents need to understand that the students are being sheltered in a secure classroom for their safety and will be released when it is safe. Recorded updates via phone and text will be sent via Blackboard connect. Be SURE that we have a current, working phone number on file so we can reach you in the event of any emergency. Parents should wait until they are notified by the school to come pick up their child(ren). Emergency pick-up procedures will be in effect at that point.

IN CASE OF A FIRE OR EARTHQUAKE DURING SCHOOL HOURS AND BEYOND THE BELL…
Students are moved out of the classrooms to a safe assembly area away from the buildings. Parents will be contacted through a Blackboard Connect phone call and a text and will be told whether or not they need to come to the school to get their child(ren). Emergency pick-up procedures will be in effect at that point.

EMERGENCY PICK UP PROCEDURES
In the event of a school wide emergency, such as those listed above, please stay calm and do not come to or call the school as staff will not necessarily be able to answer the phones or the door right away. Please wait for a call from the school letting you know that it is safe to come pick-up your child(ren).

Emergency pick-up is a two-step process:
Step 1: Adults go to the Request Gate at Bowdoin and Swarthmore (see map below). All adults must show a picture ID. School staff will confirm that the picture matches the adult and that the name on the picture ID matches a name on the child's emergency information card on file with the school. The adult then receives written authorization from the school staff to pick-up the child at the Reunion Gate.

Step 2: As the adult proceeds from the Request Gate to the Reunion Gate at the top of the stairs at Swarthmore and La Cruz (see map below), school staff will bring the child to the Reunion Gate. The adult must turn in the written authorization to pick up the child at the Reunion Gate. The adult and child leave together.

*Make certain your Emergency information card on file with the school office is accurate and includes the names of everyone who is authorized to pick-up your child.

*Make a plan! If you are picking up other people's children, where will those parents meet you to collect their children? Keep in mind phones might not be working. Be sure to make a plan for the rendezvous location now.
